Fiction, Me

Cyberpunk World Building: Sanctuary. (Part-1)

Recently I have been finding myself inspired by and drawn to all things cyberpunk. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Judge Dredd comics and Deus ex games, but something recently has renewed my interest in the genre. Perhaps it’s because I recently finished watching the amazing series that is Altered Carbon. Or perhaps it’s because of the awesome reveal of the upcoming film Alita: Battle Angel. (Seriously, if you’re a fan of Cyberpunk/Sci-Fi/action, go check out both!). And so, onto the point of this post. Whenever I feel this inspired by something, naturally, I need to write about it. I’ve decided to not only write a piece of fiction set in the genre, but create a entire world in which many pieces of fiction can be set.

(For those of you that don’t know what I mean when I say Cyberpunk, please allow me to give you the definition from the ever faithful Wikipedia: Cyberpunk is a sub-genre of science fiction in a futuristic setting that tends to focus on a “combination of lowlife and high tech “featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.)

I thought that I’d use this as an opportunity to show my readers how I create worlds and characters. I’ll go through the thought process behind my ideas and notes, and take you through the journey of planning plot lines. This is the first series that I have done in a while, so wanted to make it something a bit different. There will, of course, be plenty of fiction to go alongside it!

So, firstly, is the synopsis. This is always the very first thing that I write when coming up with new idea’s. Here’s what I came up with:

Surrounded by the wastelands and ruins of old, Sanctuary stands. A monolithic city forged of metal and stone. In a time where technological advancement threatens to consume all, war is waged in the streets and beyond the shadow. Beneath buildings packed with souls by the thousands, the Corporation patrol the streets, enforcing the ruthless laws of the new order. Down darkened alleyway await the deadly Resistance, ready to deny the new world without mercy. In fortified temples, the Clerics train in their deadly arts, preparing to prevent the end of days. Underground, through sewer and tunnel, the corrupted Skaarn wait to devour all…

In this short piece of writing I can determine much about the world that I am creating. Its main setting is a huge city, by the name of Sanctuary. Not only does this give me the setting but also a fitting title of the stories. The main plot line of the fiction, as a collective, is a war between four distinct factions. From these elements we also have also determined the atmosphere and intrigue of the story. Sanctuary is a place that is war torn, technologically advanced and over populated.

That’s all for this quick introduction. In part two I will be delving further into the factions of Sanctuary and begin fleshing out there backgrounds and story!
